The Treasure of the Steamboat Arabia
In 1856, the steamboat Arabia served as a lifeline to the frontier, bringing tons of supplies westward to settlements
along the Missouri River. The big side-wheeler had just left Kansas City when her hull was pierced by a submerged
tree. She sank in just minutes, with all of her treasures lost. Years later, the river changed course and the Arabia was
found beneath a Kansas farmer’s field. Excavation in 1988 revealed a time capsule of remarkably preserved 1856
frontier supplies. The Arabia Steamboat Museum now houses the boat’s contents in a 30,000 square foot facility.
National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial
During the “Great War,” 65 million men and women served in the military. More than 9 million died. Museum
collections and exhibitions tell more than an American story. They cover the entire war from the first shots in 1914
to the last attempts at peace in 1919. All the belligerent nations involved, reflecting both the battlefield and the home
front, are represented. The museum collects the common item carried by the soldier in the field, as well as the rare
treasure of national significance. There are over 55,000 items in the museum, library, and archival collections.

Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is the most distinguished art museum between the Great Lakes and the Pacific
Ocean. The magnificent neoclassical building houses a range and depth of collections that annually draw visitors
from all over the world. William Rockhill Nelson, the flamboyant founder of The Kansas City Star, aspired to bring
together significant works of art for the people of the region. His fortune endowed the collections, and his family’s
legacies built the building, with contributions from the estate of Mary Atkins, a Kentucky schoolteacher who married
a Kansas City businessman. Atkins bequeathed her estate for the establishment of an art museum. The Nelson-Atkins
resulted from the combined generosity of Mary Atkins and William Rockhill Nelson.
